Happy One Month on Medium, Emy. What a strange and interesting journey.

Poker night with the boys / photo by author (2017)

With the Queen of Diamonds on her ring finger

Remember, “She’ll beat you if she’s able.”

Or that’s how the song goes

But if you’re asking for my experience

I’d say I’ve won them all

And lost a piece of myself everytime I beat the house

See, my father taught me the game at age five

My cheeks have been royally flushed ever since

My eyes gleamed of chips from the winnings from my first Casino trip

And you can trust the Ace of Spades is always up my sleeve

Always ready for war

Whether playing with a deck or

Bringing out the knives

You’ll be the King of Hearts before you know it.

I don’t play Texas Hold ‘em anymore

It’s five card draw, or get a move on

I married the game, after all.

So, it’s my way, or the highway.

You know…

Happy wife, happy life….

Either way, I’m anteing up.

So either call it, babe, or raise your white flag and fold already, will ya?

Writing poems since before I knew what poetry meant. Maybe, that's why I never kept a single one. Not until my heart broke open did I start keeping my words.
